Flamengo draws with PSG in regulation time, but loses on penalties in the Intercontinental Cup final

In the Intercontinental Cup final, Flamengo drew 1-1 in normal time with Paris Saint-Germain this Wednesday (17), at the Ahmad bin Ali stadium, and ended up losing on penalties. Jorginho, from the penalty spot, scored the Flamengo goal in regulation time. The draw persisted in extra time and the game was decided on penalties, where the French team ended up winning 2-1. With the result, Flamengo finished as runner-up in the world championship and ended the season with the titles of the Brazilian Super Cup, Carioca Championship, Brazilian Championship and Libertadores Cup, in addition to taking home the trophies of the Derby of the Americas and the Challenger Cup.

The game

The match began with PSG having more possession of the ball, exchanging passes to try and reach the attack. Just eight minutes in, the French team appeared to open the scoring through Fabián Ruiz. However, after a VAR check, the referee ruled that the ball had gone out of play at the start of the move. 

The first dangerous attack by the Flamengo team came in the 16th minute. Bruno Henrique pressured Safonov, managed to touch the ball and forced a mistake from PSG. In the sequence of the play, Pulgar risked a shot from outside the area and the goalkeeper made the save. As time went on, Flamengo tightened their marking and waited to try to set up counter-attacks. 

In the 37th minute, PSG opened the scoring with Kvaratskhelia. Doué made a low cross, Rossi deflected the ball, and the striker finished into the net: 1-0. Flamengo tried to respond immediately. From a corner kick, Arrascaeta crossed to the far post, and Pulgar headed just wide. The first half ended with the French side in the lead. 

Flamengo returned with the same team for the second half. Pressing high, PSG made it difficult for the red-and-black team to build attacks, resulting in many errors in the transition to attack. Coach Filipe Luís made his first substitution in the 10th minute, bringing on Pedro in place of Carrascal.

In the 14th minute, Arrascaeta was brought down by Marquinhos inside the penalty area. The referee reviewed the play on VAR and awarded a penalty. Jorginho took the penalty, and with his usual precision, sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to level the score: 1-1. After the equalizer, PSG regained control of possession in the attacking half. 

Around the 30-minute mark, Flamengo made three more substitutions. Cebolinha, Saúl, and De La Cruz came on for Arrascaeta, Jorginho, and Erick Pulgar, respectively. In the final minutes, Flamengo pushed forward and created two chances, one with Pedro and another with Plata. In the 43rd minute, Bruno Henrique was released at speed, dribbled past Pacho, and shot over the goal. In stoppage time, PSG had the chance to win the game, but Marquinhos missed the ball inside the six-yard box. With the score tied, the match went to extra time. 

In extra time, Flamengo started by dominating possession in the attacking half. The French team no longer had the same intensity, and as a result, the Flamengo team seemed more composed in the match. At the end of the first half of extra time, PSG threatened again, but the game remained tied. 

In the final stage of extra time, Samuel Lino replaced Plata. Four minutes in, Lino received the ball on the right and passed to Luiz Araújo, who took a shot, but the ball went over the goal. The game became increasingly exciting in the final minutes, as PSG threw everything into attack trying to score the winning goal. The Flamengo defense worked hard to withstand the pressure and secure the draw. As a result, the match went to penalties.

In the penalty shootout, PSG prevailed, winning 2-1 and conquering the Intercontinental Cup. Flamengo missed four penalties and finished as runner-up. With this, Flamengo ended the season with titles in the Brazilian Super Cup, Carioca Championship, Libertadores Cup, Brazilian Championship, Derby of the Americas, and Challenger Cup.
