Flamengo Seal Dominant Victory Over RB Bragantino at Full Maracanã

With the Maracanã packed from first whistle to last, Flamengo delivered a commanding performance to beat RB Bragantino 2–1 on Sunday and extend their lead atop Brazil's Serie A to three points. The Rubro-Negro proved their superiority in the 28th round of the championship, controlling the match and converting dominance into three vital points.

Flamengo's gameplan was evident from the outset: dictate play, create chances, and seal the result. Guillermo Varela broke the deadlock in the first half with a well-taken finish, before striker Pedro doubled the advantage in the second period from a set-piece. An own goal by Bruno Henrique late on—a deflection from Bragantino's Ignacio Sosa's cross—provided a consolation for the visitors.

THE MATCH

Flamengo began with control of possession, setting the tempo from defence and regularly penetrating the Bragantino box. Inside the opening four minutes, left-back Ayrton Lucas suffered a muscular issue and was replaced by Alex Sandro. Shortly after entering the pitch, the number 26 dribbled past his marker on the flank, advanced to the goal-line and sent in a low cross for Arrascaeta, who struck the post. On the rebound, Colombian midfielder Plata fired hard but goalkeeper Tiago Volpi saved.

The breakthrough came moments later. Carrascal received on the left wing, crossed precisely into the six-yard box with his right foot, and found Varela perfectly positioned to pounce. The full-back stretched and converted with his right boot, opening the scoring in emphatic fashion. Flamengo 1–0!

With his strike, Varela reached five goals in Flamengo colours and his first of 2026. For Carrascal, the assist brought him to 15 total for the club, his tenth this calendar year.

Ten minutes on, the pattern remained unchanged—Flamengo's pressing had forced Bragantino deep. At 19 minutes, Arrascaeta received in the left corner of the box and sought Pedro inside the area, but Volpi rushed out and intercepted the cross. Plata attempted to react, but Bragantino's defender won the loose ball.

Midway through the first half, the red-and-black intensity remained relentless. Carrascal was played forward, surged past Sant'Anna at the edge of the box, stepped over the ball to create space, and struck a precise effort that Volpi brilliantly denied.

It mirrored scenes from moments before. Pedro fed Carrascal in transition; the Colombian advanced unchallenged toward the area and shot on the turn, but Volpi was equal to it once more.

As the half wound down, Pedro nutmegged his marker and was felled in the box. Arrascaeta's well-struck free-kick whistled past Volpi's far post.

Flamengo's first-45 statistics told the tale: 67 per cent possession, eight shots, 352 passes completed. Pressure and chance creation in abundance.

The second half began identically: Flamengo in command.

By the seventh minute, Plata attacked aerially between two defenders, flicked the ball on, and it fell to Carrascal running free toward goal. The midfielder burst forward and shot, but Volpi recovered and saved. Arrascaeta's follow-up from close range grazed the woodwork.

Flamengo maintained their stranglehold. At 25 minutes, following a corner won by Varela, Arrascaeta delivered the set-piece, Jorginho flicked it on at the near post, and Pedro, unmarked, finished emphatically to make it 2–0.

With that goal, Pedro reached his 178th for Flamengo, his 26th this season. Jorginho's assist was his seventh for the club in 2026, his fourth this campaign.

Shortly after, Plata executed a solo run and passed to Bruno Henrique, who contested a loose ball with Volpi, who claimed it.

Five minutes from time, after Bragantino mounted two dangerous raids and Rossi made two excellent saves, the São Paulo club got a consolation. Bruno Henrique's attempted block from Sosa's cross took a wicked deflection into his own net. Flamengo 2–1 RB Bragantino.

Post-goal, Flamengo held firm, the crowd lifting the team through a professional finish to secure all three points at home and maintain their four-point cushion in the Serie A table.
