Flamengo have secured their place in the semi-finals of the Rio de Janeiro Under-20 Championship. On Friday, October 30, the Rubro-Negro drew 1-1 with Sampaio Corrêa at CT George Helal in their second-leg quarter-final tie.
Following a commanding 3-0 victory in the first leg at Estádio Lourival Gomes in Saquarema, the Carioca side closed out the tie with a 4-1 aggregate scoreline. Diego Queiroz's goal sealed progression to the final four.
The match
Flamengo fielded an experimental and youthful starting XI, with eight players born in 2008 — all in their first year in the U-20 category. Despite their advantage from the opening fixture, the side maintained competitive intensity throughout a closely contested first half, with both teams creating chances. However, defences dominated and the scoreline remained goalless at the interval.
The second half continued in a similar vein. On 23 minutes, Sampaio Corrêa broke the deadlock through Lucas Noronha. Flamengo pushed for an equaliser as the match wore on, and found their leveller in the 41st minute. Following Rafinha's cross to the far post and two saves by the opposition goalkeeper, Queiroz seized on the loose ball and finished past the keeper to make it 1-1.
This was the defender's second goal in the competition and fourth of the season. The result confirmed Flamengo's passage with a 4-1 aggregate victory.
The Rubro-Negro will face Vasco in the semi-final, with date, kick-off time and venue to be confirmed.
