Flamengo writes another chapter of their Copa Conmebol Libertadores story this Thursday (15th). At 21:30, Rubro-Negro travel to Jorge Luis Hirschi Stadium in La Plata, Argentina, to face Estudiantes in the semi-final first leg. Seeking a strong result away from home, the Mais Querido aim to take an advantage into the decisive second leg, scheduled for 22nd October at the Maracanã.
Group A leaders in the qualifying stage with 16 points, Mengão arrive at the semi-final unbeaten in the competition and are in fine form. Leonardo Jardim's side have won six of their last seven matches, with one draw, and currently top Brazil's Serie A.
Flamengo will be without five players for the trip to La Plata. Although recovered from injury, Evertton Araújo and Ayrton Lucas remain in their transition phase, overseen by the fitness staff. Danilo continues treatment for two fractured jaw bones, while Arrascaeta recovers from a fractured left wrist. Jorginho is unavailable after being sent off in the quarter-final. Saúl and Carrascal emerge as options to fill the midfield void.
Head-to-head record
Flamengo and Estudiantes have met 12 times in their history, with Rubro-Negro holding the advantage. The record reads five wins for Mengão, five draws, and two wins for the Argentine outfit. In goals scored, Flamengo also edge it: 13 to eight.
In Libertadores competition specifically, the clubs faced each other on four occasions prior to this semi-final. Rubro-Negro won twice, there was one draw, and Estudiantes won once, with the carioca side scoring four and the Argentines three.
The most recent meeting took place on 20th May this year at the Maracanã during the group stage. On that occasion, Mengão won 1-0, with Pedro scoring in the 19th minute of the second half. In their first encounter this season, played in La Plata, the sides drew 1-1, with Luiz Araújo on target for Rubro-Negro.
The fixture also recalls the 2025 Libertadores quarter-final. On that occasion, Flamengo won the first leg 2-1 at the Maracanã but lost 1-0 in Argentina. The tie was decided on penalties, with Mengão prevailing 4-2.
