Flamengo Dominates Del Valle in Quito Thriller, Advances in Copa Libertadores

Flamengo cruised past Independiente del Valle with a 2-0 triumph on Thursday (10) at Estádio Olímpico Atahualpa in Quito, Ecuador, in the first leg of the Copa CONMEBOL Libertadores quarter-finals. Bruno Henrique and Léo Pereira netted in the second half to deliver a commanding performance at 2,850 metres above sea level.

With the result, the Rubro-Negro open a commanding advantage heading into the return fixture and extend their unbeaten run at the Quito fortress. The sides reconvene next Thursday (17) at the Maracanã.

The victory represents Flamengo's 12th win in 23 matches on Ecuador soil and their 16th triumph in 23 Copa Libertadores encounters against teams from the nation. Crucially, it ended Independiente del Valle's home invincibility in the competition during 2026.

The Match

The opening 45 minutes proved evenly contested, with Del Valle pressing down the flanks and searching for openings via crosses into the box. Flamengo laboured to fashion clear-cut chances, whilst the hosts similarly failed to convert their territorial pressure into goals.

Del Valle's best opportunity came at the quarter-hour mark. Rodríguez whipped in a cross from the right in the 19th minute, and González struck first-time, forcing a save off Rossi's crossbar.

Following the interval, Flamengo found their rhythm, locating space in attacking areas with increasing regularity. Léo Ortiz fashioned the Rubro-Negro's first effort of the match in the 12th minute of the second half, sending a header wide.

At the 57-minute mark—15 minutes into the second period—Flamengo broke the deadlock. Jorginho picked out Samuel Lino charging down the left flank, and the number 16 delivered a low cross for Bruno Henrique to finish: 1-0.

The goal marked Henrique's 120th strike for Flamengo across 383 appearances, his tenth of the campaign in 39 matches. The forward also reached his fifth Copa Libertadores goal this edition, making him the team's leading scorer in the competition with 25 overall, whilst recording his fourth goal against Del Valle specifically.

The assist was Lino's 21st for the club in 79 games and his 16th this season across 48 outings. The winger leads Flamengo's assist charts for 2026.

Flamengo pressed their dominance and doubled their tally at the 74-minute mark. Following a corner delivery by Plata, Lino found Emerson Royal, who supplied the ball into the box. Léo Pereira rose highest to head home, the ball striking the post before nestling into the net: 2-0.

It was Pereira's 20th goal in the Rubro-Negro shirt across 317 appearances and his third of 2026 in 35 matches. The centre-back now holds the record for most goals by a defender at the club in the modern era. For Emerson Royal, the play registered his seventh assist in the Manto Sagrado across 52 games, marking his sixth of the calendar year in 33 outings.

Del Valle rallied in the closing stages, but Flamengo's backline stood firm. The Mais Querido managed the scoreline to the final whistle with conviction.
