Flamengo secured a 1-1 draw against Cruzeiro on Wednesday night (12th) at the Mineirão in the opening 90 minutes of the Conmebol Libertadores Round of 16. In a balanced and intensely contested fixture, the Rio club fell behind in the second half but responded swiftly, levelling through Lucas Paquetá just 1 minute and 34 seconds after entering the pitch. The quest for a semi-final spot will be decided back at the Maracanã.
The Match
Flamengo began assertively, probing for attacking opportunities from the outset. Early on, Samuel Lino made a promising appearance after a delivery from Erick into the box. The number 16 flicked a header attempt, but possession went to Otávio.
Thereafter, the visitors worked the ball patiently through their defensive third, drawing Cruzeiro's press to create space higher up the pitch. At the 12-minute mark, Arrascaeta whipped in a free-kick searching for Léo Pereira, but the delivery sailed across the area and out of play.
Seven minutes on, Lino again posed a threat. The forward dribbled past two opponents in the transition zone and picked out Bruno Henrique, who surged free down the left, controlled and sent a testing cross to the heart of the Cruzeiro defence. Minutes later, number 16 collected the ball again in midfield, breezed past William and unleashed a fierce effort into the corner. Otávio made a solid save, pushing the ball away for a corner.
Following an intense midfield duel, Arrascaeta won possession from Matheus Henrique and released Bruno Henrique into a pocket of space on the right. The attacker fired first-time, but the ball whistled just past Otávio's crossbar.
As the first half wound down, Flamengo controlled possession in midfield and hunted for openings in the Cruzeiro rearguard. Despite the chances created, both sides headed into half-time level.
The second half opened with Flamengo immediately on the offensive. In the opening minute, Jorginho sent a precise long ball over the top for Lino to run onto between the centre-backs. The striker controlled on his chest and shot, but the ball deflected and rolled out.
At the 7-minute mark, Arroyo collected on the right flank, cut infield and finished with composure into the far corner, giving Cruzeiro the lead.
Flamengo reacted in kind. Bruno Henrique received down the left and found Jorginho in the area's mouth. The midfielder struck true, forcing Otávio into a remarkable save.
With substitutions made by Leonardo Jardim and the team chasing an equalizer, Flamengo struck in the 21st minute. Ayrton Lucas delivered a pinpoint free-kick to the far post; Léo Ortiz powered a header that struck the crossbar. From the rebound, Paquetá pounced to finish first-time and restore parity at the Mineirão: Cruzeiro 1-1 Flamengo!
Paquetá's impact was immediate. Just 1 minute and 34 seconds on the pitch, the midfielder sealed the leveller. In his return to the club, the number 10 has now notched his 27th goal in a Flamengo shirt, his ninth since rejoining the Rubro-Negro.
In the closing stages, Flamengo commanded possession in the attacking third while Cruzeiro retreated in search of a chance to reclaim the advantage.
In the 43rd minute, Royal reached the byline and crossed into the area. William managed a partial clearance, but the loose ball fell to Carrascal. The Colombian controlled, shifted left and drove a powerful strike. Otávio, however, produced another crucial save to deny a Flamengo winner.
In the final moments, Flamengo pressed with purpose in pursuit of a second goal. Cruzeiro held firm and secured the draw until the final whistle.
