Decision night awaits at the Maracanã. Flamengo face Cruzeiro on Wednesday, August 19 at 21:30 (local time) in the second leg of their Libertadores Round of 16 tie. Following the 1-1 draw at Mineirão, the hosts need a simple victory to secure quarter-final passage. Another draw sends the contest to a penalty shootout.
Flamengo arrive in strong form. Manager Leonardo Jardim's side has recorded two consecutive Brasileirão wins and cut the gap to the league leaders to just two points, with a game in hand. Last Sunday, they hammered Mirassol 5-1 away from home.
Good news surrounds the availability of forward Bruno Henrique for the clash against Cruzeiro. The attacker, who sustained an ankle knock in the first leg, trained normally and is in contention. However, Alex Sandro continues his recovery from right calf discomfort. Vitão and De La Cruz remain sidelined through muscular injury.
Head-to-Head Record
Flamengo and Cruzeiro meet for only the second time in Copa Libertadores history. To date, they have contested three competitive matches: one victory apiece and a draw. Flamengo have scored two goals across those meetings, while the Minas Gerais outfit netted three.
Across all competitions and friendlies, the clubs have faced off 105 times. The head-to-head favours the Rio side, who boast 40 wins to Cruzeiro's 36 victories, with 29 stalemates. Flamengo have also registered a superior goal tally: 138 to 124.
The Maracanã has been a fortress for Flamengo in continental football. Throughout Libertadores history, the club has contested 87 matches at the venue, recording 66 wins, 10 draws and 11 losses. They have scored 215 goals and conceded 76.
Libertadores Campaign
Flamengo topped Group A in the 2026 Libertadores group stage. The defending champions accumulated 16 points from six matches—five wins and one draw—scoring 14 goals and conceding just two.
This marks Flamengo's 14th Round of 16 appearance in Libertadores competition. In the preceding 13 occasions, they advanced to the quarter-finals on eight instances and suffered elimination five times. Notably, Cruzeiro were responsible for one such exit, in 2018.
Flamengo have participated in the Libertadores on 22 occasions throughout their history and have been continuous competitors for the past decade. The club are current champions and have won four continental titles: 1981, 2019, 2022 and 2025.
