Giovana's return to Sesc RJ Flamengo's preparations for the 2026/27 season carries special significance. Following the conclusion of last season's Superliga while managing a fracture in her little finger, the setter underwent surgery during the off-season and is now navigating a fresh chapter: the gradual restoration of movement and ball contact.
The injury emerged at a decisive moment, on the eve of the semi-final series against Dentil Praia Clube. Despite the injury, Giovana took the court for all three matches of the series, continuing to support Sesc RJ Flamengo's push for a place in the final. With the campaign complete, the number 20 underwent surgical intervention and commenced her rehabilitation programme.
Since then, the work has been relentless. Recovery involves multiple phases and is closely monitored by the club's medical staff, including physiotherapist Márcio Fonseca and strength and conditioning coach Marco Antônio Jardim. On FlaPress, FlamengoTV's platform, Giovana shares glimpses of this routine and reflects on her journey toward regaining the movements essential to a setter's daily work.
For someone whose hands orchestrate a team's distribution, the process demands meticulous attention. Gradually, mobility, strength and control exercises have given way to foundational volleyball movements once more. In training, Giovana now participates in ball-handling drills and incrementally rebuilds the confidence required to execute sets with precision.
Her progress unfolds as Sesc RJ Flamengo prepares for another season. Giovana's contract extension for 2026/27 has been confirmed, and she reunites with fellow setter Vívian to form the team's setter partnership. Flamengo retained the bulk of last season's squad whilst introducing new signings to meet upcoming challenges.
Yet her connection to the project runs deeper. Giovana returned to Sesc RJ Flamengo in 2025 after three seasons with Osasco, and quickly became instrumental to the squad. Last season, she was part of the Rio state championship and Copa Brasil-winning side that led the Superliga regular season standings.
Now, the objective is to channel months of rehabilitation into a fresh start. As the season draws near, each training session and every set represents another milestone toward Giovana's availability for Sesc RJ Flamengo.
FlamengoTV has closely documented Giovana's recovery journey and showcased the behind-the-scenes process on FlaPress. Watch the full report in the video below.
