Sesc RJ Flamengo defeats Fluminense in Copa SuperVôlei opener

Sesc RJ Flamengo claimed a commanding victory in its Copa SuperVôlei campaign opener on Thursday evening. The Rubro-Negro defeated Fluminense 3–1 (25–20, 19–25, 25–22, 28–26) at Arena Niterói, positioning itself to contest the triangular final on Saturday (Sept. 26) at 7 p.m. against Dentil Praia Clube.

Under Helio Griner's direction with Bernardinho contributing from the bench as assistant coach, Flamengo demonstrated collective strength anchored by opposite Tainara's stellar performance. The Paris 2024 Olympic medalist led all scorers with 26 points—18 from attacks, five aces, and three blocks. Central blocker Lorena and outside hitter Simone Lee each added 12 points.

Following a closely contested match decided by narrow margins, Tainara spoke to the importance of maintaining composure and conviction as the squad seeks full rhythm early in the season.

"It's about growth," Tainara reflected. "I had a chance to close the match and missed it, then got another opportunity. That experience matters—it helps you avoid making the same error again. Patience and confidence in what I train for were crucial. I kept telling myself: I train for this, I'm capable of doing it."

The 2024 Olympic champion also praised the off-court communication, particularly during pivotal moments.

"From the start, we've prioritized that connection. The bench players sharing information with those on the floor changes everything—they have a different perspective on what's happening. That communication mattered enormously. Everyone contributed: the coaching staff, Bernardo today as assistant, Hélio leading the way. It was vital to have everyone linked and supporting us throughout the match," Tainara added.
