Flamengo Claims Opening Victory Over Fluminense in Rio de Janeiro Basketball Championship

Flamengo Basketball opened their Rio de Janeiro Championship campaign with a convincing victory on Sunday. The Red-Black side dominated rivals Fluminense 97-74 at Tijuca Tennis Club in a clash marking the first matchup between the two sides in basketball in 19 years. Showcasing a controlled display, Flamengo grew into the game, opened up a lead in the second quarter and managed the scoreline until the final whistle. DG was the standout offensive performer for the hosts, contributing 18 points.

The Match

The classic started evenly balanced, with both teams demonstrating good offensive execution. Yago and Alexey impressed from three-point range, while Flamengo and Fluminense exchanged baskets throughout the opening quarter. Late in the first period, the Red-Black secured a narrow advantage, ending the quarter ahead 28-26.

In the second quarter, Flamengo returned with greater intensity and began to control proceedings. The hosts extended their lead on the scoreboard and kept their opponents under check during the period. To cap off the first half in style, Didi nailed a three-pointer with the clock expiring, sending Flamengo into the break with an 11-point cushion: 52-41.

Following the interval, the tempo remained high. Fluminense attempted to close the gap, but Flamengo answered every challenge and continued to find solutions in attack. Managing their advantage through the third quarter, the Red-Black entered the final ten minutes leading 72-62.

In the decisive period, Flamengo maintained control and left no opening for a rival comeback. The hosts extended their lead further and sealed victory 97-74, securing a strong opening to the Championship.

Beyond the inaugural triumph, the encounter held special significance for Rio basketball: it was the first Fla-Flu classic in the sport in 19 years. The last time Flamengo and Fluminense had faced each other was in 2007, also in the State Championship.
