Flamengo advances to semi-finals despite red card, holds on for draw against Ferroviária

Flamengo have secured their place in the Brazilian Women's Championship semi-finals after a gritty 2-2 draw with Ferroviária at the Fonte Luminosa in Araraquara on Saturday. Despite being reduced to ten players early in the second half, the Rubro-Negro held firm against sustained pressure from their hosts to confirm their first semi-final appearance in seven years.

Flamengo held a 1-0 advantage from the first leg and looked to build on that foundation in an open contest. The visitors made a confident start and went close within five minutes when Fabi Simões attempted a curled strike, only for Andressa to clear off the line. An offside flag had already been raised by the officials.

The breakthrough came on 11 minutes. Fabi Simões drove forward on the counter-attack, exchanged passes with Fernanda and curled a precise finish into the far corner. Keeper Luciana got a hand to the effort but could not keep it out, extending Flamengo's aggregate advantage to 2-0.

Ferroviária responded with immediate intensity. Thayslane pulled a goal back on 15 minutes when she latched onto a through pass, cut inside defender Núbia and shot low to the corner. The hosts completed their turnaround minutes later when, from a corner kick, Fátima Dutra flicked on and Pâmela dos Santos bundled home the rebound. The tie was suddenly level on aggregate.

With momentum shifting, Flamengo moved to restore their advantage before the interval. Jucinara controlled a pass on her left foot, burst through the Ferroviária defence and fired a precise shot into the corner—unmarked goalkeeper Luciana was powerless to respond. The score stood at 2-2 with half-time approaching.

Flamengo's evening took a turn for the worse in the opening minutes of the second period. Monalisa was sent off after receiving her second yellow card for a robust tackle on Fátima Dutra, leaving the Rubro-Negro to defend with only ten players for the remainder of the match.

With the numerical advantage, Ferroviária pressed relentlessly in search of the goal that would force the tie to penalties. Several clear chances fell to the hosts as they laid siege to Vivi Holzel's goal.

Before the 75-minute mark, referee Vicky looked set to award a penalty when Flávia Mota was adjudged to have fouled Fátima Dutra. However, a VAR review led to the decision being overturned.

Late in the match, Ferroviária appeared to have broken the deadlock when substitute Rhaissa found the net, but the flag went up for offside and the goal was disallowed.

As stoppage time ticked away, the hosts made one final push for the decider. Yet with resolute defending and tactical discipline, Flamengo held firm and secured a 2-2 draw that confirmed their progression to the last four.

The victory marks a return to the semi-finals for Flamengo after an absence of seven years. Their last semi-final appearance in the competition came in 2019.

Flamengo will now face São Paulo in the semi-finals as they bid to reach the championship final.
