Flamengo stamped their authority on the Brazilian Serie A title race on Sunday with a devastating 5-1 victory over Mirassol at the Estádio José Maria de Campos Maia. The Rubro-Negro now sit on 45 points, just three behind the leaders with a game in hand — a commanding position after a display of clinical finishing and defensive control.
Carrascal broke the deadlock midway through the first half, with goals from Luiz Araújo, Pedro twice, and Samuel Lino completing the rout in a second-half barrage that laid bare the gulf in quality between the teams.
Match summary
Flamengo created danger inside the opening minute. Paquetá released Varela down the right, and after the Uruguayan's low cross found Carrascal, his first-time effort crashed off the crossbar. Plata's follow-up flew over as the visitors toyed with Mirassol's backline.
With possession firmly in Flamengo's hands, they controlled the tempo and forced errors from the home side. In the 15th minute, Ayrton Lucas collected the ball on the left, cut inside and tested the goalkeeper, only for the attempt to deflect wide.
The breakthrough came at the 21-minute mark. Luiz Araújo's cross found the far post, where goalkeeper Walter could only parry. Plata redirected into the path of Carrascal, who composed himself before beating Walter to open the scoring.

Flamengo maintained their stranglehold. Paquetá sent a pinpoint cross to Pedro, whose header forced another save, while Carrascal later embarked on a mazy run towards goal before being hauled back by Denilson — an incident that warranted only a yellow card from referee Rafael Rodrigo Klein. The Rubro-Negro headed into the break with control firmly established.
The second-half onslaught came swiftly. Within seven minutes, a flowing team move ended with Pedro releasing Carrascal, who found Luiz Araújo. The winger cut inside his marker and dispatched a clinical finish. Three minutes later, another slick transition saw Carrascal feed Ayrton Lucas down the left; the full-back's low cross was turned home by the ever-alert Pedro.
At the 20-minute mark of the second period, Carrascal supplied the assist for Pedro's second. The striker, launched from the right, waited for his teammate's pass before side-footing past Walter. With that finish, Pedro reached 14 goals in the league, drawing level with Viveros atop the scoring charts.

With his team comfortably ahead, Leonardo Jardim's substitutions revitalised Flamengo further. Arrascaeta entered the fray and promptly released Samuel Lino, who struck cleanly to make it five. Mirassol managed a consolation when João Victor climbed highest from a Reinaldo corner, but it merely papered over a performance of stark superiority.
Lino thought he had added a sixth late on, only for the flag to rule it out for offside. Flamengo saw out the remainder, managing the scoreline without breaking stride, and departed with a result that keeps the title race firmly in their grasp.
