Flamengo clinches eight medals at Jose Finkel Trophy, secures two world championship cuts

Flamengo wrapped up the 2026 Jose Finkel Trophy with eight medals and two qualifying times for the FINA World Short Course Championship. Held from August 31 to September 4 at Esporte Clube Pinheiros in São Paulo, the competition brought together Brazil's top swimming talent and saw Flamengo finish fourth in the overall standings.
Over five days of racing, Flamengo swimmers captured five silver medals and three bronze. Stephan Steverink emerged as the standout performer, reaching the podium three times while securing two world championship qualifying marks.
Steverink opened Flamengo's campaign with bronze in the 400m freestyle on day one—a result that also earned him a world qualifying cut. Earlier that day, Manuel Diaz took silver in the 100m butterfly, while Joice Otero finished fourth in the women's event.
On day two, Flamengo added two more bronzes. Isabel Fagundes claimed third place in the 50m breaststroke, while Steverink, Diaz, Pedro Henrique Medrado, and Luca Tonin anchored the club to bronze in the 4x200m freestyle relay.
The 200m butterfly proved productive for the Rubro-Negro. Joice Otero won silver on the women's side, with Manuel Diaz matching the result in the men's race—his second medal of the Trophy.
Steverink returned to the podium on day four with silver in the 400m individual medley, capturing his second world qualifying time in the process. He capped his individual competition with bronze in the 800m freestyle on the final day, bringing his total to three medals.
Flamengo's final tally: eight podiums comprised of five silvers and three bronzes. The results secured two qualifying times for the World Short Course Championship and cemented the club's fourth-place finish in the overall standings, marking another successful outing on Brazil's domestic swimming calendar.
