Flamengo swimming claims nine medals at South American Games

Flamengo's swimming contingent made a commanding mark at the South American Games in Santa Fe. Stephan Steverink, Joice Otero, and Venezuelan Manuel Díaz wrapped up their competition with a combined nine-medal haul: four golds, four silvers, and one bronze.

Stephan Steverink emerged as the star performer. Competing for the Brazilian national team, the swimmer secured six medals: four golds in the 200m freestyle, 400m freestyle, 400m individual medley, and 4x200m freestyle relay; one silver in the 800m freestyle; and one bronze in the 1,500m freestyle. In the 400m freestyle, Steverink also set a new South American Games record with a time of 3:46.07.

Joice Otero equally impressed on the podium, representing Brazil. The young Flamengo swimmer claimed silver in the 100m butterfly with 59.69 seconds, sharing second place with fellow Brazilian Giulia Carvalho.

Competing for Venezuela, Manuel Díaz capped off a strong showing for Flamengo's swimming program with two silvers. The club athlete finished runner-up in both the 100m butterfly and 200m butterfly, coming within a hundredth of a second of gold in the latter event.

With nine medals claimed by its athletes, Flamengo concluded its swimming campaign in Santa Fe with a prominent presence on the podium and strong results as the Los Angeles 2028 cycle begins.
