Flamengo drew 1-1 with Vasco on Saturday in the first leg of the Estadual Sub-20 semi-final at Estádio José Bastos Padilha in Gávea. The second leg, to decide who reaches the final, takes place next Saturday in Nova Iguaçu.
The match
The classic encounter started brightly but both sides struggled to create clear-cut openings in the attacking third.
On 25 minutes, Flamengo broke the deadlock from a corner. After a scramble in the box, Dieguinho shot, the goalkeeper parried and Andrew looked to capitalize. The ball remained live in the area until João Victor finished to put the Rubro-Negro ahead: 1-0.
The match remained competitive after the interval as both teams pressed forward. On 33 minutes, Vasco levelled, also from a corner. Wanyson reacted quickest to level the score at 1-1.
Flamengo responded and came close to regaining the lead on 37 minutes. Jhefinho was brought down in the box and Johnny stepped up to take the penalty. The opposing goalkeeper saved his effort, directing it out for a corner. From the resulting set-piece, Sayago delivered into the box, Johnny rose well and headed on goal, but the goalkeeper made another fine stop.
With the sides level, everything will be decided in the second leg next Saturday in Nova Iguaçu.
