Flamengo clinch commanding 2-0 win over Mirassol, close to one point of Brasileirão summit

Flamengo secured a crucial victory in their bid for the Brasileirão title. Commanding at the Maracanã, the Rubro-Negro defeated Mirassol 2-0 on Wednesday evening in a rescheduled fixture from Round 4, climbing to 51 points in the standings. Carrascal and Lucas Paquetá found the net before half-time, sealing an essential three points for the Mais Querido, who trimmed the gap to just one point behind leaders Palmeiras. The result sees Flamengo firmly in contention at the summit and strengthens their grip on the title race. The two sides will also meet again in the second leg of the campaign.

Flamengo began with control of possession and looked to build attacks through patient passing sequences. From their opening offensive opportunity, the Rubro-Negro threatened Walter's goal. Pulgar found Carrascal in the box, who laid off to Pedro. The striker released Samuel Lino, who played a first-time pass to Paquetá in the six-yard area. Pressed by Mirassol's defence, the number 8 sent his effort wide.

With greater territorial dominance, Flamengo broke the deadlock at the Maracanã. Pulgar delivered a pinpoint long ball for Samuel Lino, who advanced toward the area and squared to Pedro. The number 9 quickly switched play to Carrascal. Unmarked in the box, the Colombian struck cleanly, bulging the net to give the Rubro-Negro the lead: 1-0. It was Carrascal's third goal in his last five outings.

Following the opening goal, Flamengo continued to dictate proceedings with sustained offensive pressure. Mirassol struggled to break out and adopted a deeper, more conservative approach, posing little threat to Rossi's goal. In the 30th minute, Pulgar was withdrawn after picking up a knock, replaced by Evertton Araujo. The Chilean, whose contract was recently extended through 2029, signalled to the bench for the change.

In the closing stages of the first half, Flamengo squandered a golden opportunity to extend their advantage. Lino received in the area, cleared the ball forward and attempted a shot. The defence blocked and the rebound fell to Varela, whose weak finish was comfortably saved by Walter.

Yet Flamengo made no mistake moments later. Carrascal sent a measured cross from the right, and Paquetá rose highest to direct a firm header into the far corner, leaving Walter no chance: 2-0. With the first-half scoreline, Flamengo's lead over Palmeiras was now just one point in the Brasileirão standings.

Flamengo made an adjustment at the break, with Arrascaeta replacing Evertton Araujo after the midfielder complained of a left hamstring tightness. The reshuffle saw Paquetá drop into the midfield pivot alongside Jorginho. The Rubro-Negro maintained their intensity and continued to press forward in search of further chances.

Mirassol, seeking a route back into the match, ventured higher up the pitch with increased regularity. As the second half progressed, however, the intensity of the opening period waned, and the tempo became more measured. Manager Leonardo Jardim made two further substitutions to refresh his side: Saúl came on for Carrascal, and Bruno Henrique replaced Pedro.

The final change from Flamengo saw Everton Cebolinha introduced for Samuel Lino. In the closing moments, Mirassol pushed forward in search of a goal, but Flamengo managed the contest with aplomb, keeping the ball and seeing out a vital win.

The victory sees Flamengo close to within one point of the summit. With 51 points accumulated, the Rubro-Negro sit just behind Palmeiras at the pinnacle of the Brasileirão. The reverse fixture awaits later in the season.
