Flamengo thrashes Sampaio Corrêa 7-1 and qualifies for the Carioca Championship quarterfinals.

Qualification guaranteed! In the last round of the Cariocão group stage, Flamengo thrashed Sampaio Corrêa 7-1 this Saturday (7), at Maracanã, and advanced to the quarter-finals of the championship. The good victory for Flamengo was built with goals from Pedro (2), Samuel Lino, Bruno Henrique (2), Everton Cebolinha and Douglas Telles. Now, Mengão will face Botafogo in the next phase of the State Championship.

The game

Needing a win to secure qualification, Flamengo started the match suffocating Sampaio Corrêa in their own half. The first chance came just five minutes in. Carrascal took a corner kick into the box, Vitão headed it towards the six-yard box, and Paquetá unleashed a powerful first-time shot. Zé Carlos made a great save, deflecting it for a corner.

The game was stopped after eight minutes due to a seizure suffered by midfielder Alexandre, who fell to the ground and needed medical attention from an ambulance. After a five-minute stoppage, Flamengo opened the scoring with Pedro. The number 9 received the ball in the area, cut past the defender and shot past the goalkeeper to make it 1-0. It was the striker's first goal of the season.

Two minutes later, Sampaio Corrêa managed to equalize with a goal from Rodrigo Andrade. However, VAR detected an offside by Matheus Goiano at the start of the play. The red-and-black team continued attacking, looking to extend their lead. Carrascal took a corner kick into the box, and Plata headed the ball freely, but it deflected off the defense and went out of play.

Flamengo extended their lead in the 30th minute with a beautiful team play. Paquetá delivered a lovely pass to Samuel Lino, who cut inside from the left and rolled the ball into the box. Pedro, well-positioned, finished with a sliding tackle into the net: 2-0.

In the final stretch, Flamengo almost scored a third goal. After applying high pressure, Pedro recovered the ball at the edge of the penalty area and shot low, aiming for the goalkeeper's right corner. The ball went just wide of the post. In stoppage time, a spectacular goal almost came at the Maracanã. Paquetá passed to Royal, received the ball back, passed to Pedro, who turned past his marker and returned the ball to the number 20. He went one-on-one with the goalkeeper and shot with the inside of his foot towards the corner, but the ball hit the post.

In the final play of the first half, Sampaio Corrêa reduced the deficit. Rodrigo Andrade was released at speed, controlled the ball, and lobbed it over Andrew to score the first goal for the Saquarema team: 2-1. Flamengo's partial victory is currently securing their qualification for the quarterfinals.

After the break, coach Filipe Luís made a change to the team. Erick Pulgar came on for Plata. With this, Paquetá moved from the second defensive midfielder position to the right wing. Six minutes in, Carrascal passed to Pedro on the right side of the area, he controlled the ball and unleashed a powerful shot that was well saved by Zé Carlos.

In his first play on the field, Bruno Henrique extended Flamengo's lead. Samuel Lino stole the ball, entered the area and passed it to the number 27, who struck a shot with the outside of his foot into the corner, giving the goalkeeper no chance: 3-1. Flamengo continued to press the attack and create opportunities. This time with Wallace Yan, who came on for Pedro. The striker controlled the ball, turned and shot powerfully, forcing another good save from Zé Carlos.

To cap off his excellent performance in the game, Samuel Lino scored the fourth goal for Flamengo. Emerson Royal delivered a perfect low cross for the number 16 to finish into the net: 4-1. With the rout already underway, Cebolinha entered the game, and in his first play, he found the net. Royal delivered another perfect cross and the striker headed in the fifth goal.

In the final minutes, Flamengo didn't let up, continued the attack, and scored their sixth goal through a product of their youth academy. Douglas Telles pressured the opponent's build-up play, stole the ball, passed to Bruno Henrique, who returned it to the youngster inside the box. He unleashed a powerful shot and found the back of the net: 6-1.

And there was still time for a seventh! Wallace Yan broke into the area and was brought down by Guilherme. The referee awarded a penalty. Bruno Henrique, who had to retake the penalty because he had touched the ball twice, struck the ball powerfully into the top corner to seal the Flamengo rout at the Maracanã.

With this result, Flamengo qualified for the Carioca Championship quarterfinals. This is because Portuguesa beat Nova Iguaçu 1-0 at Luso-Brasileiro. Therefore, Flamengo secured the fourth spot in Group B and will face Botafogo in the next round.
